Gildenburgh 2012

OK, so we have done the Blue Lagoon, Stoney Cove, Chepstow and Vobster in the last twelve months - where haven't we been for a while? I know, let's try Gildenburgh.

Very quiet (and very frosty) in early January but a nice change. Saw the Provost, the Double Decker Bus, a barge, a coach etc. Surprisingly little fish life except for a huge Sturgeon around 19 metres (depth, not length...). Fears that it was dead proved unfounded as it swam off before a better photo could be taken!

Happy New Year

First dive of 2012 - A Bank Holiday in January and what better way to start the year than a quick trip up the A5 to Stoney Cove. Viz was still excellent and the water a balmy seven degrees. Along the way, a shoal of Pike enjoying the weak sunshine at five metres and the surprise discovery of where the DO left his car parked.

Bluey Christmas BBQ

Late December 2011 and time for a festive dive at the Blue Lagoon. Despite a chilly seven degrees and the hint of snow in the air, quite a few dives were completed. Then up to the Car park for burgers, hot dogs, Christmas cake and (of course...) Mulled Wine.

A Shot in the Dark...

Over the summer of 2011, the shotline on our centre wreck in the Blue Lagoon had disappeared. This was potentially the most useful mark for training; stretching from 16 metres to almost the surface, it had proved it's worth for Dive Leader training and Buoyancy Workshops as well as allowing you to locate the wreck in the general "murk" at that depth.

Mid December and a chance to replace the shot; a new shotline was prepared with markers and loops every three metres and, after a few false starts and some careful measurements, it was in position.

"The Rez"

A different sort of dive. Mid December 2011 and up to The Rez in Staffordshire. Two metres might not sound much but our intrepid team managed three dives and took the opportunity to practice line laying and overhead environment skills.

A Stoney Christmas

Mid December 2011 and a last trip to Stoney Cove. The ten divers who braved the depths were (mostly) rewarded with crystal clear water and fantastic visibility. Even the pair who explored the twenty metre rock face claimed "It must have taken real skill not to find any wrecks in such good conditions".
A dive (or two) was followed by the traditional three course meal in Nemo's where, despite the chef's fears (we were late...), the food was excellent.

Blue Lagoon Training

As diving slows down at the end of the season, training picks up. Whether Sports or Dive Leader, Rescue Skills, SMB or more advanced we can do most things in the Blue Lagoon. Pictured are some Sports Diver rescues and a Dive Leader "Shot Recovery".

Blue Lagoon BBQ 2011

The last Wednesday in September 2011 and, as is traditional, a night dive and barbecue. Unlike last year, the weather was fine and warm. Good dive (although a surprising number of "diver seperations") and then a chat over a beer and a burger. Thanks to those who organised and the four visiting clubs.

Stoney Cove 2011

Another trip to Stoney Cove, viz was awful for the most part - the 35 metre hydrobox was like a night dive - pitch black but a torch beam carried many metres.

The chance was taken to practise buoyancy skills in preparation for running a BSAC Workshop in the Branch.

Dragon Boat Cover 2011

Early September 2011 and the Club were asked to provide safety boat cover for the local Secklow Hundred Club as they hosted a national league Dragon Boat Competition. The weather was less than kind - waterproofs were donned as the rain poured down.

Blue Lagoon Roadshow

Late August 2011 and a Roadshow at the Blue Lagoon organised by Milton Keynes Council. There was childrens entertainment, a flying display by Hawk's & Owl's and an exhibition of Snakes, Lizards, a Chinchilla & a giant Tortoise. There was also a group showing children how to build Bird Box's and, last but not least, a stand from MKSAC.

As part of our display, we had been asked to stress the dangers to children of deep (and cold) water; we therefore laid out a full scale display of how far each wreck was from the surface culminating in "19 metres - dark and cold"

Weymouth 2011 - More wrecks

Mid August 2011 and, for a change, a weekend of half decent weather. So good, in fact, that we knocked three more wrecks off this years challenge. The Aeolean Skye and Black Hawk (Stern) on Saturday and the submarine M2 in a good ten metres viz on Sunday. The weekend was rounded off by a drift off Balaclava Bay with Dogfish, Hermit Crabs, Gurnard and [just a few] Scallops.
